T

he Senate just passed what’s being called the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” But for anyone who relies on Medicaid, SNAP, or student loan relief, there’s nothing beautiful about it.

This bill is the most significant threat to affordable healthcare the country has seen in years.

Let’s break it down.

What’s In the Bill?

The bill includes:

  • Trillions in tax cuts, mostly extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts.
  • Major increases in spending for border security, defense, and fossil fuel energy.
  • Deep cuts to healthcare programs—especially Medicaid.
  • Cuts to federal food assistance and student loan programs.
  • Elimination of clean energy tax credits.
  • A $5 trillion increase to the debt ceiling, the largest in U.S. history.

The Congressional Budget Office says this bill will increase the federal deficit by $3.3 trillion over the next decade the big beautiful bill ….

Medicaid Is on the Chopping Block

This bill directly threatens the future of Medicaid. Cutting Medicaid means stripping healthcare access from low-income families, seniors, pregnant people, and people with disabilities. Half of all children in the U.S. rely on Medicaid. In some states, it covers more than 60% of births.

There is no path to health equity that involves cutting Medicaid. Period.

A Blow to Public Health and Prevention

Programs that make communities healthier—like food aid, student debt relief, and clean energy incentives—are getting slashed. These cuts don’t just impact individual families. They shrink the public health safety net that supports entire communities.

Healthcare doesn’t start in the clinic. It starts in homes, schools, neighborhoods, and policies. This bill works in the opposite direction.

Why This Matters Now

If passed in the House, this bill will become law. That means these cuts will be locked in for years. Healthcare costs will go up. Access will go down. The gap between who gets care and who doesn’t will grow even wider.

This is a turning point.
